The need for blood transfusions and the frequent short supply of donor blood of the right type led to World Blood Donor Day being declared by the UN and WHO in 2004.
Each year on this day there are awareness campaigns and blood donation drives go on all over the world. The shortage of supply, need, and the importance of safety issues with donated blood are all emphasised. World Blood Donor Day is one of only eight WHO observances that shine the spotlight on crucial needs in global healthcare.
